Clarence Lagoon has a practical access option for visitors bringing a kayak or other non-motorised boat. Tasmania's Inland Fisheries Service says a key for the recently installed gate can be arranged through the Lake St Clair Field Centre on 03 6289 1115. The vehicle access described is for launching and retrieving those craft. IFS access update, 4 September 2026.

The conditions are clear: stay on the existing track, take rubbish away, and use gas or liquid-fuel stoves. Campfires and firepots are not permitted. The service says compliance matters to keeping this access available. Official access conditions.

For a touring group, put the phone call on the preparation list alongside loading the boat. Ask how key collection and return will work for your dates, and confirm the permitted vehicle arrangements before leaving home. A gate key should never be read as general permission to explore beyond the authorised route.

This is a useful reminder that looking after access starts with small decisions: where we drive, what we leave behind and whether we make the effort to understand the arrangement before arriving.
