Towing Builds: The Numbers That Make or Break the Setup
Towing is where several separate limits interact. A headline towing capacity does not guarantee that a particular vehicle, trailer and load can use all of it at once. Getting the measured numbers right is worth more than any accessory.
The four numbers, and how they trap you
| Number | What it means |
|---|---|
| GVM | Maximum the vehicle may weigh, loaded, including tow ball download |
| Braked towing capacity | Maximum trailer weight — the number in the ads |
| GCM | Maximum for vehicle and trailer together |
| Tow ball download | Weight the trailer puts on the ball. Use the trailer and tow-vehicle requirements and measure the loaded combination; it counts against vehicle mass and affects both axle loads. |
The trap is assuming GVM plus maximum towing capacity must equal GCM. They often do not. The correct check uses actual loaded vehicle mass and actual trailer axle mass, with tow-ball download already carried by the vehicle. Our towing calculator keeps that accounting visible so ball download is not counted twice. Always use the exact ratings for the variant and any approved modification.
Ball weight is the hidden payload killer
In an illustrative example, a 3,000 kg trailer with a measured 300 kg towball download uses 300 kg of vehicle mass capacity. This is arithmetic, not a recommended percentage. Because the ball is behind the rear axle, rear-axle load can rise by more than the download while the front axle unloads; weigh both axles.
For a tow rig, compare the net fitted mass of the bar, winch and other accessories against what is removed. Material labels do not establish an exact weight saving. Ask for part-specific mass and confirm the finished axle loads.
What to fit, in order
Use a weight distribution hitch only where the vehicle, towbar and trailer makers permit it. Check mirrors, brakes and controller compatibility for the exact combination. NSW’s current guidance identifies all-wheel braking and automatic breakaway requirements above 2,000 kg GTM; confirm the applicable trailer approval and local in-service rules. Airbag helper springs may change ride height under load but do not increase GVM, axle or other limits, and are not a guarantee of stability. Fit and operate them within the kit and vehicle instructions.
When a GVM upgrade genuinely helps — and when it doesn't
A properly approved GVM increase helps only where GVM is the binding limit. It does not automatically change GCM, axle ratings or braked towing capacity. If GCM stays fixed, carrying more vehicle mass leaves less capacity for the trailer; jurisdiction-specific approval routes must be checked. Transport WA: GVM and GCM FAQs.
The honest recommendation
A lighter trailer is not practical for everyone: layout, family needs, accessibility and an existing investment may rule it out. But where a smaller or lighter trailer can still do the job, it is often the lesser evil. Reducing trailer mass can improve several limits and the way the combination drives without relying on expensive modifications that may solve only one number. If changing the trailer is not workable, measure the complete rig and address the actual binding limit rather than assuming suspension or a GVM upgrade fixes everything.
Enter your vehicle and the parts you're considering to see where your payload lands, then check the tow combination against GVM, GCM and both axles.
