How to Pack a Caravan: Load Placement, Ball Weight and Sway
Where a caravan carries its load affects the combination’s behaviour. Good packing matters alongside measured mass, manufacturer limits, tyres, speed and conditions.
Why position and weight both matter
Mass far from the trailer axles can worsen its response to yaw. Loading is one contributor to sway alongside speed, tyres, coupling setup, wind and the tow vehicle; a drawing cannot predict whether a specific combination will remain stable.
Keep heavy items low and near the axles, secure them, and avoid balancing heavy masses at opposite ends. Staying within a mass limit does not by itself establish good load distribution. Transport WA: IB-107B Safe Towing.
Pack within the trailer’s instructions
Use the storage areas and load limits specified by the trailer maker. Keep heavy items low and near the axle group, balance side-to-side and secure everything against movement. Rear carriers, drawbar boxes and added batteries need their own structural and mass checks.
Tank contents change as you travel. Check realistic full, partly full and empty states where tank position can materially alter towball or axle loads.
Towball mass: measure it against the right limits
Use the trailer maker’s loading guidance and the vehicle, towbar and coupling limits. General percentage rules differ between official guides and are not permission to exceed any component rating. There is no universal percentage or speed threshold here that guarantees freedom from sway. Transport WA towing requirements.
Measure loaded towball mass with suitable equipment and the trailer in the specified attitude. Ask a weighing service for a method that records vehicle front/rear axle loads, trailer axle mass and total trailer mass without double-counting towball download.
The tow vehicle is half the system
The same principle applies behind you. Weight in a rear canopy, on a rear bar carrier or on a roof rack over the tailgate all sits behind the rear axle and adds to the yaw the van is already generating. If you are chasing stability, move gear forward in the ute before you buy hardware.
Use the vehicle and tyre maker’s pressure guidance for the loaded combination. The placard may specify more than one load condition; it is not simply an empty-vehicle figure. Seek exact advice for changed tyre sizes or construction. BFGoodrich Australia: Tyre Pressure.
A weight distribution hitch is not a sway fix
A weight distribution hitch changes axle reactions; it does not reduce total combination mass or increase a rating. Use one only where the vehicle, towbar and trailer makers permit it, and follow their setup and reweighing procedure. It cannot correct a badly loaded trailer. Transport for NSW towing guidance.
Sway control — friction bars or electronic stability systems — damps oscillation once it starts. Also useful, also not a substitute for loading correctly.
If the combination becomes unstable
Know the vehicle and trailer manufacturer’s sway instructions before travelling, including any trailer-brake controller procedure. Avoid abrupt steering or braking and stop safely to investigate. Do not assume shifting a load forward alone resolves the cause or keeps the vehicle’s rear axle and towball within limits. Obtain practical towing training and have an unstable setup inspected before continuing.
A practical packing order
Plan the packing on level ground with the trailer’s instructions beside you. Heavy equipment belongs in approved low storage near the axles, lighter items elsewhere, and every item needs restraint. Check the permitted location and loading of any water tank rather than treating water as an arbitrary balancing tool.
Then weigh the combination in travel condition, including passengers and supplies. Obtain front and rear vehicle axle readings, trailer axle mass and loaded towball mass, and check every applicable limit. Ask the weighing service what its process measures and what the service costs.
Load your vehicle, enter the trailer, and see GVM, GCM, both axles and ball mass checked together. No weighbridge yet? It can estimate from what you carry.
Ball weight comes off your payload. See where your vehicle lands before you load the van.
