Bronco Basecamp: the touring questions behind Ford's built-in campsite
Updated and sources checked
Ford expects the Bronco Basecamp in Australia from mid-2027, putting a different kind of touring vehicle on the horizon: a five-seat AWD SUV with electric drive and a petrol range extender.
The manufacturer's initial specification includes two electric motors, a 1.5-litre turbo petrol engine and a 49 kWh usable battery. Its 800–900 km range estimate is preliminary, rather than a tested Australian touring result. Australian pricing and final specifications are still to come. Ford announcement, dated 9 September 2026.
The camping features deserve a closer look. The lifting roof and 7.5-litre warming/cooling storage are for the Outer Banks version; the mattress for the folded seats costs extra. Ford lists a tailgate table and up to 6.6 kW of onboard power, with outlet limits and an extra-cost external adaptor. Appliance use also draws on the vehicle's battery. For weekend camping, being able to sleep in the vehicle and run appliances from its battery could make getting away a little easier. You would still need to check how much carrying capacity remains once passengers and gear are aboard, and whether the towing limits suit anything you plan to pull. For trips beyond major centres, spare-wheel provision and access to servicing are just as important.
Those are the details we'd want before comparing it with a conventional 4WD build. For now, it's an interesting touring proposition with important questions still open.
